restoration

We recently completed a major restoration of the International One Design “SATIN DOLL” built in 1938.  The nine month restoration involved replacing thirty two ribs, the stern post, a section of the keelson, a broken keel bolt, eight planks and several floor timbers. Many of the original steam bent oak ribs which had been sistered or repaired with bronze strapping were removed and replaced with laminated elm one at a time to retain the shape of the hull.  The canvas deck covering was removed and replaced with a thin layer of plywood, fiberglass cloth saturated with epoxy and re-painted. The king planks, toe rails and much of the trim was replaced and refinished with 9 coats of varnish.  All the painted surfaces and bright work were striped and also refinished. As with most wooden boat’s it’s difficult to determine the extent of damage until the project is under way.  Our talented and skilled crew enjoyed the challenge and worked out all of the  exact details. To see Satin Doll sailing again was an extremely rewarding experience for us all.
